The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by over 1.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 both saw a decline of approximately 1.5%. This downturn marked the S&P's weakest single-day performance since October and concluded a nine-day winning streak for both the Nasdaq and Dow Jones.

The recent market surge had been building on a robust year-end rally, with the Dow achieving its fifth consecutive record close on Tuesday and the S&P 500 nearing its all-time high from January 2022. Despite hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve officials attempting to manage expectations about potential benchmark rate adjustments, investors had largely disregarded these concerns.

Wednesday's unexpected decrease in UK inflation, reaching its lowest point in two years, fostered optimism that inflationary pressures were easing in major economies. Additionally, a decline in German wholesale inflation supported this perception. Bond yields extended their decline this month, with the 10-year Treasury yield falling below 3.9%.

However, there are uncertainties about whether the anticipated faster rate cuts might inadvertently lead the US economy into a downturn. Observers are keenly awaiting upcoming data, particularly Thursday's GDP update and Friday's PCE inflation reading (the Fed's preferred measure), to discern whether the Federal Reserve can successfully achieve a "soft landing."

In terms of individual corporations, FedEx witnessed a significant drop of more than 10% in its shares after failing to meet quarterly profit expectations. The delivery company also revised its full-year revenue forecast downward, citing a decrease in demand from the US Postal Service.
